Art Display by Vecsey Opens at John Jermain Memorial Library

June 21, 2017 - Sag Harbor Express

The John Jermain Memorial Library will present an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by East Hampton artist Susan Vecsey. This exhibition runs through September 4 with an opening reception July 29 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Vecseyʼs abstract paintings are inspired by the landscapes close to her home near Cedar Point. Born in New Jersey, she now lives and works in New York City and East Hampton. She received a Bachelor’s from Barnard College and Columbia University and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.

In 2012, she was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome and recently had a solo exhibition at the Greenville County Museum in South Carolina, accompanied by an exhibition catalogue with an essay by Phyllis Tuchman.

Direct observations of landscape are a starting point for the artist — a vehicle to convey a certain emotion and to explore color, form and shape.

“There is a great pleasure in the whole process of creating from the anticipation, the processing to the realization,” Vecsey said. “With poured paint, timing is everything and it is important to be decisive with it and also ready to accept or reject the unexpected.”

Vecsey begins with charcoal studies where she draws perceptive ideas on paper and then creates elaborate color studies. Afterwards, she thins oil paint and pours it directly on to primed linen or paper and allows it to flow naturally with some artist guidance.

The John Jermain Memorial Library is located at 201 Main Street in Sag Harbor. For more information, visit johnjermain.org.
