Art Southampton Returns
June 26, 2015 - Long Island Weekly
Art Southampton, the premier contemporary and modern art fair in the Hamptons, will hold its fourth edition on the grounds of Nova’s Ark Project in Bridgehampton July 9 through 13. The fair will offer high quality works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as incorporate design and the decorative arts, a new addition this year.
Artists from all over the world will be showcased, including a strong representation of Long Island artists. Lawrence Fine Art in East Hampton will have a presence at the fair with artists George Schulman from Huntington and Athos Zacharias from Springs. At 89 years-old, Zacharias is one of the last living links to the first generation of Abstract Expressionist painters, many of whom spent significant periods of time on the East End of Long Island.
Abstract Expressionist and Figurative Expressionist painter Elaine de Kooning wrote of Zacharias, “Athos Zacharias, as a painter, has serendipity; his colors and forms always charge into the right place at the right time.”
Lawrence Fine Art describes George Schulman’s paintings as “wildly exuberant, colorful and kinetic…They look like Candy Land-like maps of a fantasy place.”
The Berry Campbell Gallery in New York City’s booth will consist entirely of artists who live or have lived on Long Island including former Hofstra University professor and abstract expressionist Perle Fine.
Fine was at the forefront of the Abstract Expressionist movement as it unfolded in New York and East Hampton. Christine Berry describe’s Fine’s earlier work as “classic Expressionist…with bold gestures and energetic lines.” Her style changed over the years, but according to Berry, “Perle Fine was considered cuting edge throughout each stylistic stage of her career which spanned fifty years.”
These works and many more will be on display and available for sale at the fair.
Proceeds from the fair’s VIP Platinum Preview at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, sponsored by Christie’s International Real Estate, GRAFF Diamonds and Ruinart Champagne will benefit the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill and Southampton Hospital. The preview provides collectors, curators, art advisors, architects, designers and decorators the first view and opportunity to acquire the finest blue chip modern and contemporary works of art from emerging and mid-career artists presenting cutting edge, Post-war and Pop era works, with a focus on design and functional art. The fair also will highlight some of the East End’s most prolific past and present artists.
LUXE Interiors + Design is the fair’s design and media sponsor, ensuring strong participation from the design community with the creation of LUXECANVAS Design Ambassador Program, spearheaded by LUXE Editor-in-Chief Pam Jaccarino.
Christie’s International Real Estate will host an on-site booth, presenting international luxury residential real estate offerings throughout the duration of the fair.
Events include cocktail receptions with artists and book signings, as well as daily scheduled private tours of some of East End’s leading artists’ studios and collector homes. An event schedule is available at www.art-southampton.com.
The internationally acclaimed New York Academy of Art, of which Andy Warhol was among the original founders, returns for the fourth year. Guest of honor renowned artist April Gornik curates an exceptional exhibition of alumni works.
Award-winning LaGuardia Design designed the Art Southampton Sculpture Garden and main entrance of the pavilion. The landscape architecture firm actively pursues an interest in how elements of the native landscape, existing topography and neighboring influences help define the character of each site, and look to unify the landscape into a cohesive bond by firmly connecting architecture and site.
Last year’s Art Southampton attracted top collectors, cultural leaders and philanthropists of the East End. During the course of the five-day fair, a record 21,000 collectors, art enthusiasts, curators and influential attendees visited the 100,000 square-foot pavilion.
